Hostage Families to Constitution Committee: "We have to stop apologizing for the state's existence and to do what needs to be done in order to bring back the people who are there and tend to the next generations."
Family members of the hostages kidnapped to Gaza addressed the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Monday. Family members of hostages belonging to the Tikva Forum and members of bereaved families from the Heroism Forum also addressed the committee. Following the statements made by the hostages' family members, Committee Chair MK Simcha Rothman (Religious Zionism) said: “We are all praying and working to have you see all the hostages return as quickly as possible to your families." Dalia Cusnir, sister-in-law of Iair and Eitan Horn who were taken hostage from Kibbutz Nir Oz, said: “My family made Aliyah from Argentina, and I have worked at the Jewish Agency for the past 20 years. I have a degree in Jewish education and every morning I get up and act according to the same Jewish values, and I don't understand how it is that we're on the 108th day [since October 7] and committees are dealing with other issues. We don't feel that action is being taken; again and again new videos come out with information about people who are dead. As of November 25, my two brothers-in-law were alive, and the question is whether they still are. Where am I living, that I have to beg in the Knesset for you to do something to bring back my loved ones.
“How can Israel be called a state when the basic contract has been breached, and for 108 days people have been going through hell, rape of men too; how can I explain to my children that it's safe to live here when every morning my daughter asks whether there's a deal yet. I have come here because the only answer I care about is for you to bring them back alive and understand that their blood is on your hands. Every minute that you aren't dealing with them you are forsaking them and betraying them. How do you expect people to continue to enlist, pay taxes and work when you don't answer that this is the only thing you're dealing with. You have to bring back our loved ones alive and not deal with anything else," Cusnir said. Tamar Eshet, cousin of Evyatar David: “I learned that no committee is dealing with the hostages this morning. Without making light of your work and of the state, it is too many days that there has not even been an option for [the release of] Evyatar, because he's a man, unfortunately for him. If I can't rely on you, I might as well put on a flak jacket and search for Evyatar in Gaza.
It's on you. There is no one [else] who can save Evyatar and all 136 hostages. More than one hundred are still alive, and we keep getting tragic news, and this cannot be allowed to continue." Tzufit Libman, sister-in-law of Elyakim Libman, who was kidnapped to Gaza: “I would like to ask that the release of the hostages be carried out as soon as possible, so that we don't have to be in the moral position of choosing between our love for Elyakim and our love for the country. I am asking you to do the right thing. In military terms, we have the strongest army in the world and the frustration is very difficult; even though it is the strongest, I feel that we don't have the daring and the troops in Gaza are being depleted. We need to have the courage to make the choices, even when they're difficult vis-à-vis the United States. We have to stop apologizing for the state's existence and to do what needs to be done in order to bring back the people who are there and tend to the next generations. “I am exhausted by this event, and there is an order of the day at this point.
I hope that the people who are here will go down in history with power and belief in our abilities, and that God will be with us; we will be victorious and will come out of this event strong. We miss Elyakim very much, and it's as if everything is going back to normal when we have no normal routine. We won't be whole until he comes back, and we are asking that this be done with the utmost speed," Libman said. Daniel Steinberg, father of the late Col. Yonatan Steinberg, commander of the Nahal Brigade who fell on his way south in an encounter with terrorists: “He was alone and fought against the terrorists knowing that he didn't have a chance. In his heroism, he stopped all the movement of the terrorists on the road heading for Netivot and Ofakim, because they thought he was the vanguard for the troops and didn't realize that he was alone. I'm from the Heroism Forum, which is an apolitical forum of bereaved families. Our belief is that the hostages will come back alive; we have to believe that. We are bereaved families and what is done cannot be undone. We want to reinforce the leadership. Yoni told recruits at the Western Wall that the oath of allegiance is a significant landmark in a full journey, which includes the understanding that the life of the collective, the nation and the state are in the center, to the point of willingness to lay down one's life for them. “How is it possible that there's no sniper who takes down the Hamas terrorists who take over the trucks? How it is possible that they're returning to the northern [Gaza Strip]? After three months, the reservists are repeatedly demanding to continue the war. How is it possible that the media publish things that cause demoralization. You, the Members of Knesset, have the power to bring about a change in the people's spirit. We in the Heroism Forum, like the majority of the people, expect you to demand that the war cabinet instruct the army to complete its mission as decided upon by the Government. This is a time of favor, a historic time," Steinberg said.
